Day 365

Doom of the Harlot

Scripture

Observation

The last of the seven bowls of judgment has been poured out, and now John sees the doom of "Babylon the Great." Its disastrous end is announced by an angelic messenger, and mourned by kings and merchants alike who profited from her rich trade and false religion. While Babylon is being destroyed on earth, the heavens resound with praise in preparation for the marriage supper of the Lamb. A warrior emerges in great pomp and majesty to bring God's final destruction upon the beast, false prophet, and their armies—a warrior whose name is Faithful and True, The Word of God, King of Kings and Lord of Lords!

Application

When you think about it, there are many portions of Scripture that—from a human point of view—never should have had to be written in the first place. Passages such as Noah's adventures on the ark (Genesis 6-9) . . . Israel's wandering in the wilderness (Numbers 14-26) . . . Joshua's terrible defeat at Ai (Joshua 7) . . . Jonah's "detour" away from Nineveh (Jonah 1-2). In each case, God's demand was the same: obedience. Man's response was the same: disobedience. And though God might have relented if man had repented, instead judgment fell and another sordid chapter was added to Scripture.

God's love is unswerving because "God is love" (1 John 4:8). But though God is "not willing that any should perish" (2 Peter 3:9), millions will perish if they do not heed his call to repentance.

How about you? And your family? And those dearest to you? Are your names written in the book of life? What better time than at the dawning of a New Year to come to God—just as you are—so that you too can sing in the new year, "Hallelujah! Praise the Lord! Salvation is from our God. Honor and authority belong to him alone" (19:1).

Prayer

We come before you with prayers of praise, Father. It is by our answered prayers that we are enriched and in conscious communion with you. We want to thank you for all the blessings and goodness you bestow on us and it is all done because we have established a relationship with you. You accept our prayers through the atoning blood of Jesus Himself, His presence and the grace he gives us each dawning day. We repent and pray for forgiveness for our sins. In Jesus' name we pray! Amen!
