Under God's Watchful Eye!

Weekly Devotional

November 14— Psalm 121: The Supernatural Preserver

Reflection

The account of Paul's faithful witness has closed in Acts and you've launched your daily reading into the crucial New Testament epistles. The great doctrines of the faith are explained by Paul in Romans, giving you all you need to know and yet offering you an opportunity to plumb the bottomless depths of Christian truth.

When you step back from your reading and think for a moment, you realize that God has everything covered. He knows precisely what's happening, and why. Let's think about that aspect of his character while reading Psalm 121.

Ceaselessly Love!

Food-conscious Americans have been made increasingly aware of the dangers of artificial preservatives. Even natural preservatives have their drawbacks. But did you know there exists a supernatural Preservative that is described in Psalm 121? If you haven't guessed already, the name of it is: God!

Circle the words that show God's care for you: helps, watches, cares, defends, protects, keeps, preserves, guards. These words hold the key to the psalm. God's sustenance of his people is complete and unending. He never sleeps; he never leaves; he never lets down on the job. He cares for them ceaselessly and tenderly.

The greatest enemy of people (such as the psalmist) living in Palestine's arid climate was the sun. It burned the skin, dried the throat, and made midday work unbearable. For that reason, the psalmist describes God as a protection day and night (121:6), bringing cool refreshment to his people. Where is the "heat" of life wearing you down? Make it a point today to take a refreshment break with your Preserver. He'll sustain you.

Prayer

Lord in heaven, the psalmist reminds us that too often we also seek help from the wrong sources. You who made the mountains and the heavens and us always have your loving eye on us. You take care of us when we don't know what to do next. We can come to you to find rest and strength for our souls in the constant battle we are fighting against the enemy. Thank you for your protection and care, your sustenance and refreshment of our soul making us more than conquerors through your great love for us. In Jesus's name we give you the glory, the honor and the praise! Amen!
