Day 271

Jesus Coming to His Own! |
Scripture
Observation
Zechariah proclaims judgment to fall on Israel's neighbors, while Israel herself will be preserved to see the coming of her long-awaited Messiah. In remarkable detail Zechariah predicts:
- the King's arrival, riding on the colt of a donkey (9:9);
- the Good Shepherd's betrayal for thirty pieces of silver (11:12);
- the use of the "blood money" to purchase a field from a pottery maker (11:13).
Like Daniel, Zechariah mentions a future nation's rise to power long before that nation even existed (9:13)! And for his efforts, he too receives the critics' doubts for his supernatural insight!
Application
From his prophetic stance in the fifth century B.C., Zechariah looked into the future and penned a startling series of predictions concerning the coming Messiah. Serious students of the Bible will find today's reading an enormous challenge, for while Zechariah saw the mountain peaks of prophetic events, he did not see the valleys of time in between.
Commentators differ in their interpretation of the passage, but this much seems clear: Christ came once as a lowly King riding on a donkey's colt (9:9). He was rejected and betrayed (11:12-13). He will yet come again to exercise dominion "from sea to sea" (9:10).
Are you ready for him to come back? Have you enthroned him as King in your heart and life? It is serious business to reject the King of kings. Put your name in the blank: "Rejoice greatly,_____! Shout with joy! For look your King is coming! He is the Righteous One, the Victor!" (9:9). Is that sentiment true of you?
Right now you are free to accept or reject his kingly claims on your life. But there is coming a day when "every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess that Jesus is Lord, the the glory of God the Father" (Philippians 2:10-11). Then he will come as Judge and Sovereign and then it will be too late. If you have never done so, wouldn't now be a good time to enthrone Him in your life?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, although Jesus have come and paid the price for our sins we know by having your Word hidden in our heart we can be protected from doing wrong for the Holy Spirit convicts us in the midst of all our sins. We repent to sin no more and we give you the honor, the glory and we praise you all our days on earth while we await our Heavenly home. Thank you Jesus for Calvary. In your precious name we pray! Amen!
