It's Time to Rebuild |
Haggai Introduction
Observation
The final three Old Testament prophets are known as the "Post-exilic Prophets" because they address their messages to the returnees in Jerusalem following the Babylonian Exile. The people waste no time beginning to restore their beloved temple. But delays and distractions soon undermine the work, setting the stage for Haggai to appear with a new word from the Lord. In four brief but powerful messages, Haggai exhorts the people to put first things first. With renewed courage and commitment, the citizens respond by completing the temple and clearing a place of God in their hearts.
Application
Take a seat for a few moments among the ruins of Jerusalem, and allow Haggai to speak to your heart. His message is short, so give it your undivided attention. Here are his four points with some practical questions to ask yourself after each:
- Be involved. "And the Lord gave them the desire to rebuild his Temple; so they all gathered and volunteered their help" (1:14). Are you regularly involved in Bible study and worship? Are you active in a ministry?
- Be courageous. "Take courage for 'I am with you,' says the Lord Almighty" (2:4). Do you hold fast to Christian principles in your home and office? Is your faith free from weakening doubt?
- Be clean. "You people were contaminating your sacrifices by living with selfish attitudes and evil hearts. But all is different now" (2:14, 18). Have you experienced God's cleansing and forgiveness? Do you avoid compromising situations and defiling influences?
- Be glad. "For I have specially chosen you, says the Lord Almighty" (2:23). Does your face show forth the joy of knowing the Lord? Is your heart free from deadening self-pity and preoccupation?
The sermon is over; would you offer the benediction, please?
Prayer
Thank you, Lord, for not expecting the impossible from us. We know that we can do all things through you who gives us strength. So, we surrender our life to you completely in our daily walk with you. We want to live holy and pleasing lives in your sight. Please guide us and help us to let our light shine so brightly that unbelievers will come to know you and believe. In Jesus' name we pray! Amen!
