Singing Praise to Our Great God! |
Weekly Devotional
September 14—
Psalm 95: A Reason for Singing
Reflection
Amos was a farmer and fig-picker, and we know very little about Obadiah and Jonah. All three were simply ordinary people with an extraordinary God who used them to do extraordinary things. Perhaps you're feeling rather ordinary today. If so, realize that God can use you just as dramatically as he used these men and others. Turn your eyes on him today in praise by meditating on Psalm 95 to refresh you in your walk through the Bible.
Lift Every Voice!
Would you describe your singing ability as (a) fit for Carnegie Hall, (b) fit for the shower, or (c) something that gives other people fits?
Notice the two invitations in Psalm 95: "Oh, come, let us sing" (v. 1), and "Come, kneel before the Lord our Maker" (v. 6). There is good reason for both, regardless of the quality of your voice. Why should you want to sing the praises of God? Because he is a great God and a great King (v. 3); he is strong (v. 4); he is creative (v. 5). In a word, he is omnipotent!
The psalm has its own built-in application. What should be your response today in the light of that knowledge? "Oh, that you would hear him calling you today [Do You?] and come to him! Don't harden your hearts" (v. 7-8). While God is omnipotent, he is not impassive. You can grieve him (v. 10) by ignoring his commands; or you can honor him by singing to him—our great God!
Find a hymnbook and spend a few minutes paging through the many familiar songs of the faith. Select one hymn to sing or read as a prayerful act of worship to your great God and King. Then lift up your voice, for he is worthy of your adoration!
Prayer
Our Great God, how we love you. We kneel before you in adoration and appreciation. You are our God; we are your sheep. Lord, make us soft in your hands. Use us today to guide many into your loving arms, and keep us from a hardened heart to love and be kind to all especially to people in need of your salvation. Through Jesus Christ we pray. Amen!
