Day 164

David Mediating on God During Night Watches! |
Scripture
Observation
The freedom to be transparent before God, to express to him exactly how you feel, is an important part of prayer. David's prayer life reveals the deepest emotions of his heart. The welfare of his nation (60) and the duties of his office (61) weigh heavily upon him. He yearns for a growing relationship with God (62-64)—a relationship his enemies know nothing about! He stands in awe of God's powerful creation (65) and revels in God's matchless salvation (66), inviting all who read his words to "Come, see the glorious things God has done" (66:5).
Application
Psalm 63 was penned by David when he was in the wilderness of Judah, a desolate region where water is scarce, vegetation is almost nonexistent, and the heat of the day makes every activity a burden.
These barren surroundings prompt David to write, "How I search for you! How I thirst for you in this parched and weary land where there is no water. How I long to find you!" (63:1). Soul and body, David longs to be in the presence of God.
David knows that the thirst and hunger he feels for God will be satisfied as he follows hard after him. "At last I shall be satisfied" (63:5). In seeking God early, David will find elements of God's character to reflect upon late into the night (63:6). In searching for him in a "parched and weary land," David will find refreshment "in the protecting shadow of your wings" (63:7). In cleaving to God, David will find God upholding him (63:8).
Jesus told his followers, "Happy are those who long to be just and good, for they shall be completely satisfied" (Matthew 5:6). How is your spiritual appetite? Carve out time to get alone with God today for fifteen minutes or so of "spiritual thirst quenching." Enjoy his presence; feast on his Word; let Him satisfy the yearning of your heart.

Prayer
Almighty God, there where we see suffering, sin and sorrow in the world, make us Your hands and feet to help those thirsty for you. Like David meditated on You throughout his night watches, we want to also meditate on You and Your Word. And, we want to mediate on effectively spreading your Word throughout the World. Help us O Lord. In Jesus name! Amen!
