January 21—Greatest Gift for Life!

Reflection

The faithful example of Joseph in Egypt, the sovereign care of God for his people, the rise of Moses the deliverer of God—the Lord powerfully continues to teach us through the pages of his Word. He is in control—no matter how bleak the situation appears! Let’s praise him today as we pause in our daily walk through the Bible by focusing on Psalm 4. Take time to think through the words you read and respond from your heart to the God who can be just as powerful and awesome in your own life today!

Greatest Gift EverPraying

Are we praying the way God intend for us to pray? In Psalm 4, David finds himself on the verge of disaster. His kingly honor has turned to shame (v.2). Distress is all around him. And so, he cries out for help to the One who has come to his aid in the past. “Hear me as I call, hear my prayer” (v.1). Does that sound like a prayer you have prayed? But then David ponders what he has just said. Is God fickle? Does he only listen to certain prayers of his children? When in distress, must his children beg for his attention? No. And so in verse 3 David confidently declares, “He will listen to me and answer when I call to him.” What began as a prayer ends as a claimed promise. Think about the prayers you frequently offer to God. Are they requests for things God has already promised to supply? “God, meet my needs.” It is He that will supply all your needs from his riches in glory, because of what Christ Jesus has done for us (Philippians 4:19). “Lord, go with us on this trip.” I am with you always, even to the end of the world (Matthew 28:20).

Prayer

Our Mighty God, we realize that too often we come to you out of breath crying for help, demanding to be rescued, as if you really don’t know or care what’s happening to us. We praise you. Father, because you do know, and you do care! You’ve promised to meet every need we ever have. Help us to claim your promises, and to be grateful for them. In Jesus loving name, amen!

Praise Him!
