Day 343

Forgive as Jesus Christ Forgives!

Philemon Introduction

Onesimus is a desperate slave who has just wronged his master, Philemon. Slaves were crucified for lesser offenses than his! He had run to Rome, where he found through Paul a glorious new slavery—to Jesus Christ. In gratefulness, Onesimus serves Paul. He repents, but he has not made restitution. Paul sends him back to his master with this letter, asking Philemon to forgive and accept him as a fellow brother in the Lord. This "postcard" provides a glimpse of Paul's affectionate heart and reminds us of our forgiveness in Christ.

Observation

Does Christian love really work, even in situations where one brother has sorely offended another? Will it work, for example, when a prominent Christian "employer" has been robbed by one of his most notorious "employees"? Paul has no doubt! He writes a "postcard" to Philemon, his beloved fellow-worker in faith, on behalf of Onesimus—a deserter, thief and formerly worthless slave, but now Philemon's brother in the Lord! With much tact and tenderness, Paul asks Philemon to receive Onesimus back, forgiving him and treating him as he would treat Paul himself. Knowing the reality of Philemon's faith, Paul is confident that brotherly love will carry the day.

Application

Reconciling a difference is never easy and seldom pleasant, but Paul's letter to Philemon provides a much-needed model in the delicate task of asking for and accepting forgiveness.

Paul nowhere minimizes the wrong suffered. Forgiveness is not blind to the facts, and Paul does not seek to condone Onesimus' behavior toward Philemon. At the same time, Paul pleads for forgiveness on the basis of another's merit. Forgiving one another is possible because Christ himself provided the model by forgiving sinful and undeserving men.

Paul promises to repay Onesimus' debt. Forgiveness demands personal involvement. There is a price to be paid in terms of time, money or inconvenience if estranged parties are to be reconciled.

After seeing Paul's model, look at your own relationships. Is it time for you to take the first step in forgiving a brother or sister in Christ? It will never be any easier than it is today—in God's strength!

Prayer

Our prayer today God, is to be filled with your Spirit, so that we may know your will. We stand firm in all your will, mature and fully assured in your Word. We want the same for all that are guilty of wronging us so that they too can receive the gift of forgiveness you provide for those who believe in your Son our Lord Jesus Christ. By filling our hearts with the Word and the Spirit, we are able to discern your will. Because you are the guide and compass of our life, we praise you on high and give you all the glory and honor. In Jesus' name! Amen!

Spirit-Filled!
