Day 342

Weekly Devotional

December 7— Psalm 136: A Thankful Heart

Reflection

In the past few days you've read a number of New Testament epistles—almost one a day! Today, take the time to review what you've read from Philippians through Titus. What principles have you grabbed hold of and put to work in your life? What characteristics of God have come through the lines? What areas of your life need God's cleansing and empowering attention today?

As you consider those questions, think about your heavenly Father who made your relationship with him possible. He deserves your special thanks today, doesn't he? And Psalm 136 can help you verbalize your thanks right now.

Be Thankful

A Bible teacher was once asked how a Christian could effectively fight bitterness in his life. His wise response was twofold: "Fill your mind with God and cultivate the art of thanksgiving."

The writer of Psalm 136 knew this truth. He issues a call for thanksgiving to the Lord, the God of gods and the Lord of lords (vv. 1-3). But what is there to be thankful for? The psalmist takes pen in hand and begins to compile his own list: God's creative activity (vv. 4-9), his deliverance from enemies (vv. 10-24), his daily supply of food and mercy (v. 25).

With good reason, the psalmist closes his song the same way he began it: "Give thanks to the God of heaven. His love endures forever." See if you can continue his list of reasons to be thankful. Can you add ten more verses (from your own life) that show God is worthy to be praise?

Prayer

By meditating on your Word and keeping it in our hearts, we can know what your will is. For we know that we cannot only do your will externally but from the heart. We pray as we live an obedience life of thanksgiving before you for you answer the prayers of the righteous. Your good gifts are holy not only because of your creative power but also because our prayer. We want to be in your presence constantly, so that we can do your will. Help us with our walk through this life to live in your very presence always. In Jesus' name we pray! Amen!
