October 28— Psalm 116: A Gift for God

Reflection

John, the beloved disciple, has been leading you through the events of the life of the Son of God on earth. Through his miracles and his message, he speaks of reconciliation with the Father. Today, take the opportunity to praise God for the relationship you enjoy with him through his Son. Express to him your love by contemplating Psalm 116 on this special day of personal worship.

Love the Lord. . .

Do you love the Lord? When was the last time you told him so? Psalm 116 begins like a child's prayer: "I love the Lord..." The psalmist had prayed; the Lord had answered. And those specific answers to prayer now act as an incentive for the psalmist to pray all the more! "Because he bends down and listens, I will pray as long as I breathe!" (116:2). Driven to prayer by a life-and-death emergency (116:3), the psalmist finds God faithful. And once the crisis is past, he desires to thank God in some tangible way. But what do you give God who has everything already?

Three "gifts" are mentioned in the closing verses of Psalm 116 that make fitting tokens of thanks for his answers to your prayers: (1) The gift of testimony—"I will publicly bring him the sacrifice I vowed I would" (116:14). Make a public declaration of his faithfulness and provision in you life. (2) The gift of service—"O Lord, . . . I will serve you forever" (116:16). Be available and expendable to do God's bidding in your life. (3) The gift of worship—"I will . . . praise his name" and "worship you and offer you a sacrifice of thanksgiving" (116:13, 17). Magnify God's name and draw upon his limitless resources often.

Where is God in line for a "thank you" from you today? Pick one of these three ideas and use it to tell the Lord, "I love you!"

Prayer

Oh Lord, we love you with all of your power because you are our strength, our tower, our joy and our crown. In all your works and yours alone, we love you until your sacred fire fill our whole soul with pure desire. Help us in this doubtful race not to stray again. Strengthen our feet with a steady pace to press forward in Thy way. Our soul and flesh we pray that you fill with your heavenly light for the whole world to see you in us. In your precious name, Jesus our Savior, we pray! Amen!
