Day 297

Confrontation in the Temple

Scripture

Observation

In today's study, Jesus visits Jericho—the previously destroyed and accursed city—and his acceptance there is a pivotal incident in the Gospel of Luke. It provides the context for 19:10, Luke's theme and an illustration in miniature of the whole course of Jesus' earthly life. Continuing on to Jerusalem, Jesus is met by the festive crowds who hail his arrival. But even as he enters the city in triumph, Jesus' opponents are plotting his speedy and permanent exit.

Application

Jot down the first three names that come to mind in response to the following question: Who would you definitely not want to receive a dinner invitation from? Now examine your answers. Why did you pick those three individuals? What made them particularly undesirable as dining partners? (Caution: Your answers are being recorded by hidden camera!)

Luke 19 records the story of Jesus dining at the home of an "undesirable," a man who was despised and spurned by his fellow Jews. Zacchaeus was a tax collector and he had purchased this right from the Romans! Tax collectors were viewed as thieves and traitors and with good reason. They were free to stop people at will, set up roadside "taxation booths" on a moment's notice, and assess taxes as they saw fit. Little wonder public opinion was dismayed when Jesus accepted Zacchaeus' invitation to dinner.

Throughout his earthly ministry Jesus associated with questionable types: adulterers, tax collectors, the sick, poor, and disadvantaged. Why? In order "to search for and to save such souls" (19:10). Have you developed that habit yet? Invite someone out to dinner this week, someone you might not normally be attracted to, but who needs a listening ear and loving friend.

Prayer

Dear Father, we want to pray as Christians ought to pray. We want to act and pray like God-called people and God-empowered people burning with the desire to go and spread the gospel worldwide so that all people would hear the glad tidings of salvation and have an opportunity to receive Jesus Christ as their personal savior. Please guide us closer to you so that we may hear your voice and confess your name wherever we go. Hallelujah, in Jesus' name! Amen!

Be God Inspired!
