Day 278

A Depiction of Jesus Feeding the Multitude!

Scripture

Observation

It is difficult to remain neutral in the presence of Jesus! Either you embrace his claims and honor him as Messiah, or you reject his signs and sermons and attribute his power to demonic forces. Matthew traces the twin lines of reception and rejection increasing reception by the common people who sense their need (as illustrated by the woman of Canaan, 15:21-28), and increasing rejection by the religious leaders who look only for an occasion to accuse and discredit Jesus (12:9-14). In response to their unbelief, Jesus begins to teach in parables—earthly stories with heavenly significance (13:3-53).

Application

"There are none so blind as those who will not see." It's one thing to have a legitimate question for which you are seeking an answer. Jesus welcomed seekers and questioners (7:7), promising to teach them, take their burdens and grant them rest. But it's quite another thing to demand a sign and refuse to be convinced when the evidence is ample (12:38-42).

Think about your own relationship with God. In what ways are you honestly and sincerely seeking answers from God with a humble disposition to obey? In what areas are you demanding that God conform to your will, with an attitude that says, "My mind is made up, God—so don't confuse me with your plan for my life"?

A number of groups are portrayed in the passage you are reading today—and each responded with a different heart attitude.
  • The Jewish leaders asked to see a miracle (12:38).
  • The Nazarenes scoffed, "He's just a carpenter's son" (13:55).
  • The apostle Peter exclaimed, "Tell me to come over to you" (14:28).
Which "seeker" found what he sought? Which seeker will you emulate today as you walk humbly with God?

Notice the teaching techniques from the Master Teacher's parables—they were characterized by simplicity, informality and specificity. His goal was to communicate truth, not to impress his audience. Is that your goal when you teach?

Prayer

Dear Father, grant us a compassionate heart like Jesus. Help us to see ripened hearts that are ready to receive Your Son into their lives. We are grateful that you have chosen us to to go forth into your harvest to be disciples for those in need of your saving grace. If you need to use somebody God, use us for we adore you with all of our heart. In Jesus' name! Amen!
