Psalm 100: Joy in the Court of the King!
Reflection
Congratulations! We have nearly completed our walk through the Old Testament. Think back over the lessons learned from the books and lives of Haggai and Zechariah this past week. Hope shines through the prophetic announcements—the hope of the Lamb of God coming to take away our sins.
It's an appropriate time then to pause, look back in thanksgiving, look ahead in praise and anticipation, and worship of God. Psalm 100 will encourage us to do just that!
Praise and Worship Him!
When the president of the United States appears in public, he has often been greeted by a rousing rendition of "Hail to the Chief." The title is appropriate, for the object of attention is none other than the Commander-in-Chief of the United States. But what do you play when the Lord God, the Commander-in-Chief of the universe, appears? How do you honor him? What fitting song of tribute can you render him?
You might want to start with Psalm 100! The opening line could well be translated, "Hail to the Chief," for that is the awesome stature of the Lord God. Then continue, "For the Lord is always good. He is always loving and kind, and his faithfulness goes on and on to each succeeding generation" (v. 5).
Isaac Watts captured the essence of verse 5 in a hymn. Read this stanza twice, copy it onto a card or slip of paper, and make it your constant mediation throughout the day as you "obey him gladly": Wide as the world is Thy command, Vast as eternity Thy love; Firm as a rock Thy truth shall stand, When rolling years shall cease to move.
Prayer
Lord God, our Father, We sing with joy before you today. Help us to obey you gladly, with an expectant, ready heart. For you deserve our complete attention, our total submission, our faithful allegiance. And so We give ourselves to you today in joy and praise. Thank you for leading us through your Word so faithfully, and continue to show us truths for today as we continue in it. In the name of our glorious Savior, Jesus Christ! Amen!
