Day 253

Amos' Message, "Seek God"!

Scripture

Observation

The theme of Amos' message—sin brings judgment—is amply illustrated in the life of Amos' nation, where oppression, corruption and drunkenness have become a way of life. Though God has repeatedly attempted to discipline his people, they remain stubborn in their rebellion. Famine, drought, pestilence, mildew, death, defeat—nothing has turned them from their fatal course. Five times over, God declares, "Yet you wouldn't return to me," prompting Amos to close his indictment: "Therefore prepare to meet your God in judgment, Israel" (4:12)

Application

There are certain parts of your background and makeup over which you had no control. God never consulted you before he selected your parents, color of hair, height, nationality or shoe size. These were determined by him before you were ever conceived (Psalm 139:13-16; Jeremiah 1:5). Hearing that, you may be tempted to conclude life is a fatalistic journey over which you have no control.

Not so! The Bible makes it clear there are important choices that you and you alone must make: the decision to believe in Jesus Christ for eternal life (John 3:16-18), the decision to live a life distinct from the world (2 Corinthians 6:17), the decision to "Be good, flee evil" (Amos 5:14). Your destiny is determined by choice, not chance.

And as with any decision, it is impossible not to decide, for to postpone the decision indefinitely is to decide already. Take the three decisions mentioned in the previous paragraph and decide on your response to each: will you or won't you? Choose carefully, for your very life and happiness are at stake!

Prayer

We desire to do your will, Lord. Thank you that through faith and prayer, we receive the power and strength to obey. We as believers know that it is not impossible to keep your commandments because through prayer and faith our nature is changed and made a partaker of the divine nature. The inability to keep your commandments because of a weak, fallen state is removed and replaced by a heart that gladly obeys your Word. May your will be done. In Jesus' name we pray! Amen!

Source of our Divine Nature!
