A Depiction of a Revived Revival! |
Weekly Devotional
August 28—
Psalm 85: Revive Us Again
Reflection
The rebellion of Judah, the judgment of God of God. Ezekiel has been preaching those twin themes continually. Now he shifts to surrounding nations, showing that God has much against them as well. Then he turns to look at the horizon of hope, seeing the restoration of God's people and a new covenant.
God seeks revival in the lives of his children. It had happened in the past, but now it seemed hearts were hardened unalterably. Do you sense your own heart growing lukewarm? Now is the time for revival. Spend today in God's Word with Psalm 85, and ask your Lord to revive you again.
On Having a Spiritual Awakening!
One of the hardest things in the world to revive is a revival. Elijah demonstrated to the entire nation assembled on Mt. Camel that the Lord is God (1 Kings 18), but within a few years the people had returned to their worship of Baal.
Jonah's preaching turned Nineveh upside down (Jonah 3:1-5). Only 150 years later, however, the city had returned to its pagan ways and was swept away like a flood by the Babylonians (Nahum 1:7-8).
Psalm 85 depicts a nation to which revival had come in the past. The first three verses contain six statements of what God had done to revive the people. But the revival was short-lived. Old patterns and practices had returned. Lukewarmness had replaced spiritual vitality. What the nation needed now was a revived revival. And so the psalmist cries out on behalf of his countrymen, "Oh, revive us!" (v. 6).
Spiritual awakenings and national revivals are well documented in history but what about today? Revival in your country can only come when first there is revival in its citizens and that means it must begin with us and our family.
Tonight before you retire, kneel in a time of prayer for revival and spiritual awakening. Ask God to let it begin with us and our family, our church, our business, our neighborhood and our nation.
Prayer
We praise you God for our Savior who died and is now gone above. We praise you for our Spirit of light shining in all our dark places. He borne all our sins and cleansed every stain so no believer will perish. Revive us again by filling each and everyone of our hearts with your love and rekindle us with the fire from above. For this alone only you are worthy of the praise, the honor and the glory. In our Savior's name! Amen!
