Day 220

"Precious Memories"

Weekly Devotional

August 7— Psalm 75: Graceful for the Memories

Reflection

Jeremiah is called by God at a young age to serve as his representative to a rebellious Judah. The Babylonians are about to invade the land, he warns, so repent! But sin so pervades the nation that the cries of the weeping prophet go unheeded. Despite continual reminders of the judgment that awaits, the end finally comes. Their panicked attempt to turn to God is too late.

God keeps his word—whether it's positive or negative. Today let's spend some moments thinking through a song about God's faithfulness in the midst of judgment—Psalm 75.

Pleasant Memories!

Just hearing a song such as "Precious Memories" can cause you to relive memories from days gone by. In the same way, the composer of Psalm 75 realizes that reliving the "mighty miracles" of God can spark thanksgiving. Retelling the great deeds of God is an indispensable part of worshiping God. Thinking about his faithfulness and power in the past can only lead to one inescapable conclusion: he is worthy of praise! "I shall forever declare the praises of the God of Jacob" (75:9).

There are many ways to recall memories of God's past dealing in your life. As a family, or just by yourself, try one or more of the following Praise Projects this evening:
  1. Look at some slides, home videos or photos that remind you of God's faithfulness over the past year.
  2. Swap memories with one other person about the most faith-stretching experience you have had so far this year.
  3. Thumb back through your checkbook and let it remind you of doctor's appointments (times of illness), care repair bills (unexpected emergencies), or other times when God showed up to meet your needs—physical, financial and spiritual!

Prayer

Great God Almighty and Father, we marvel when we recount in our mind your many blessings in our life. Your judgment on the wicked is certain, but we praise you that you have rescued us from that judgment through your Son. Lord, bring to our mind often today the mighty miracles in our life that give proof that you care. Our praises ascend to you on high. In Jesus' blessed name! Amen!

Thank You God for Loving Us!
