Day 191

A Virtuous Woman: Priced Above Rubies!

Scripture

Observation

As you've seen, not all of Proverbs was written by King Solomon, Chapter 30 begins, "These are the messages of Agur, son of Jakeh, addressed to Ithiel and Ucal." All four of these individuals are found nowhere else in the Bible, but the words of Agur live on in the timeless truths he shares. You might think of it as "Wisdom in Twos, Threes, and Fours." Agur describes four things that are insatiable (v. 15-16, four that are startling (v. 18-19), four that are intolerable (v. 21-23; two from each sex!), four that are small and yet extremely wise (v. 24-28), and four that are stately (v. 29-31). The concluding chapter of Proverbs was penned by King Lemuel. In it you will read godly advice handed down from his mother, and find a description of a virtuous women that honors the dignity of womanhood. A godly wife is a rare treasure indeed!

Application

Can you think of twenty-two good reasons to applaud your wife or mother? The book of Proverbs closes with this exhortation. "A woman who fears and reverences God shall be greatly praised" (31:30). Then, just to show it can be done, Lemuel writes twenty-two verses (v. 10-31, one verse for each of the twenty-two letters in the Hebrew alphabet) extolling the virtuous woman in his life. Think of it as going from A to Z in your praise of the godly women who have impacted your life for God.

Take a sheet of paper and try it! Across the top, write the name of your wife or mother. Down the left side of the paper, write the twenty-six letters of the English alphabet. Then begin combing 31:10-31 for praiseworthy characteristics of your "Mrs. More Precious Than Gems." For example: T=Trustworthy (v. 11), Z=Zealous about her housework (v. 27), etc. When you're done, why not invite the woman in your life out for a special dinner and present her with your "Scroll of Praise." She's earned it!

Prayer

Dear God, all women who love you and your Word want to be that virtuous woman to be admired by all she encounters. Help us all, O Lord, to walk in the path of righteousness so that our light shine so brightly that it would guide those needing you right into your loving arms! In Jesus' name, amen!

Be a Light to the World!
