Day 67
Reflection
God installs a new leader for his people, assuring him of his abiding presence in the difficult days of conquest that lie ahead. The joy of entering the Promised Land is balanced by the sobering task that faces them. A surprising setback is traced to sin in the camp, which God deals with decisively so that the nation can continue moving forward. Finally the land is won and divided among the tribes, and Joshua exhorts the people to serve the Lord in the land he has given them.
As you'll read in the coming days, the problem with thrilling victories is the treat of complacency afterwards. Ant that's the thought David develops in Psalms 18. Take some time to think through these verses carefully as we pause to worship our loving Lord today.

Building Confidence
Living in the glow of yesterday's victories can be helpful, harmful and bother helpful and harmful. As David sits down to pen the words of Psalm 18, he has many warming memories of God's past deliverances in his life. God has been his "fort where I can enter and be safe. He is a rugged mountain... Savior... rock... tower of safety" (v. 2). David knows from firsthand experience that God is the One who hears, who avenges, who lifts up, who rescues, who rewards, who shows mercy, who gives strength to those who put their trust in him. And that knowledge gives David confidence to trust God in future days as well: "I will praise you among the nations" (v. 49).
But there is a danger for those who bask in yesterday's victories: complacency. Just because
God has promised to fight for you does not mean you can sit idly by and do nothing! Look at David's action steps of obedience: "I have followed his commands...I kept close watch on all his laws...holding myself back from doing wrong" (vv. 21-23).
Sit back and reflect on God's faithfulness during the past year and spend a few minutes reliving those past victories. Now talk to God about what you intend to do during the rest of this year as you walk in confident obedience to him.

Prayer
God our rock, our fortress and our deliverer, thank you that you are always faithful to your promises but we want to make sure we do not become complacent Christians because of all the victories you have afforded us. Let us continue to walk in your commands. In His Almighty name, amen!
