Day 45

The Truth!

Weekly Devotional

February 14— Psalm 12: The Truth

Reflection

In your reading these past few days you’ve started wandering in the wilderness with the nation of Israel. Now would be a good time to pause and ask yourself how you would have responded to the situation they faced if you had been there. It’s easy to point our finger at these faithless people and wonder how they could be so lacking in trust. And yet, if we really admitted the truth, we can see ourselves often in the same place. When the pressure builds and the fears increase, we’re quick to take the easy way out. Today, let’s think about trusting our worthy God with David by mediating on the words of Psalm 12.

Changeless Truth

Truth is unchangeable. Winston Churchill once said of truth, “Panic may resent it, ignorance may deride it, malice may distort it, but there it is.”

One plus one equal two. It always has, and always will. Nothing can change the accuracy of such a statement. Nothing men may say or do will in any way affect its significance to those who understand its truth.

And so, it is with God’s changeless Word. It was David’s firm anchor, even in times of stinging mockery as described in Psalm 12. As he clings to his righteous lifestyle, David feels all alone. He is troubled because those around him are devoting themselves to empty, double-minded, arrogant words. But then the psalmist remembers God’s words: pure, meaningful, and totally reliable in contrast to the hollow words of men (vv 6-8). And, in them, he finds comfort.

God does not practice double-talk. Men’s words are fragile and deceptive; God’s words are stable and sure. On a three-by-five card write out a verse which speaks of the truthfulness of God’s Word (such as psalms 12:6; 19:7; 119:89). Under the verse add the words one plus one equals two. Neither will change forever! Carry that card with you today and share it with at least one other person.

Prayer

O Lord, we give you our burdens, our pressures, our fears all of our concerns. Thank you that your Word is unchangeable, unbreakable, strong, and stable. Give us the wisdom and the strength to trust you and your Word totally when we seem to be surrounded by troubles. Help us realize continually that in truth we are surrounded completely by you. In our loving Savior’s name. Amen!

The Way!
