Day 4
Observation
After the flood, Noah's descendants multiplied and begin repopulating the earth. But in defiance of God’s command to disperse throughout the world, they decided to settle in one central locality, Babel. God judged their rebellion by distorting their language and forcing them to scatter over the earth as he had originally commanded. Clearly, sin survived the purging waters of the flood. From this point on, the narrative focused on one man, Abram and his descendants, the Hebrew people, through whom God would provide a Redeemer for man’s sinful nature.
Application
So far in our reading of Genesis we have encountered three illustrations of the same factor at work in man’s relationship to God—Adam and Eve who were given the garden of Eden to enjoy with only one forbidden act to avoid but they sinned and lost their paradise, the generation that followed continued their rebellion and were swept away in the flood and Noah’s descendants refused to spread out as God had commanded and suffered languages confusion. This tell us that obedience to God bring blessings; disobedience results in judgment. I am as you should also be clear about the fact that God is serious about His commands. Let me repeat, obeying God’s commands lead to blessings and disobeying His commands will cause us to experience God’s judgement.
Prayer
Thank you, God, for allowing us to learn from the examples of Adam, Noah and Babel disobedience. Lord, help us to be mindful of the consequences of disobeying your commands and to look forward to the blessings that awaits us for obeying your commands. Thank you in Jesus name! Amen!
