Day 13
Observation
Today we will read about the fourth patriarch in the Genesis account—Joseph, the most favored son of Jacob. His popularity with his father and frankness with his brothers, results in estrangement and adversity. In a fit of jealousy his brothers sell him to a passing caravan. But God’s hand is evident in Joseph’s life, and despite his unjust imprisonment in Egypt God prepares him for the emerging nation of Israel. His faith and integrity stand in stark contrast to the shameful behavior of his brother Judah (chapter 38).
Application
Lord, please get me out of this mess! If you have prayed that frantic prayer, then you’ll enjoy the story of Joseph’s life. When you, like Joseph, find yourself tangled in the web of adversity, chances are your first reaction is to look for an escape route. Joseph must have been tempted to pray that one-line prayer on many occasions after he found himself in Egypt, enslaved and alone. He could have used his circumstances as an excuse for bitterness, depression, and revenge. But through it all, the Lord was with him so that everything ran smoothly and well. (39:23). Joseph’s steadfastness under pressure uniquely molded him for future usefulness as Egypt’s prime minister!
What are we experiencing that is a molding force of pressure today, and how are we reacting to it? Are we looking for the nearest exit? Or are we asking God to shape us into a vessel for greater service? What faith-stretching ordeal are we presently experiencing?--Ask yourself this. Also, ask yourself what is one positive change God is making in my life as a result of it? Write it in your journal; tell a friend about it; thank God for it!

Prayer
Lord, please shape us into vessels for greater service to do good works all for your glory! Let us proclaim joyously—Lord, if you need use somebody, you can use me! In Jesus name who came to serve, amen!
